TERRITORY

Poveglia is a small island in the southern part of Venice with a dark history, which invokes unpleasant feelings with many people.
The history of urbanization of the territory dates back to 1645, when the first buildings were erected on the island by order of the Venetian government (a military fort in the form of an octagon is one of the few that survived to our time). In 1793, the island was turned into a temporary isolation ward for plague patients; in 1805, the function of the isolation ward was made constant under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1922, the existing buildings were converted into a shelter for the mentally ill, and then used as homes for the elderly, until its closure in 1968. After that, the territory was briefly used for agriculture, and then it was completely abandoned and closed to the public.
The rich, interesting history of the island and its conservation give reason to think about transforming its territory with ultramodern projects that will allow to breathe new life into him and rethink the approach to the «negative history» template.
The idea of the university’s project concept is based on the creation of new plastic and design, which implies preserving the history and identity of the place with rethinking the susceptibility of historical territorial factors affecting the psyche: terrible stories turn into an element of attraction when the island’s main theme is the cult project of a new campus park. In addition to students, the territory is designed for visiting residents of Venice and tourists who can freely visit the park, museum and exhibition complex and multifunctional areas for education and recreation.
